FROM NEWARK TO BELFAST
This project combines peer mentoring, global service learning, and international travel into an exciting educational experience for high school students from Newark, New Jersey and Belfast, Northern Ireland. All participating students will earn a certificate in Peer Mentoring from Queens College in Belfast and be challenged to launch small peer or near peer mentoring programs in their home cities. Students from Newark, N.J. will also visit Northern Ireland and the students from Belfast will visit Newark.
This project is a unique partnership between MENTOR Newark, St. Peters Imaculata Youth Centre (Belfast Northern Ireland) Newark Public Schools, the City of Newark and the Education Authority Belfast N.I. with support from the CHAD School Foundation Newark and My Brother's Keeper Newark.

Travel to Belfast, Northern Ireland

Learn about the culture of Northern Ireland with a focus on the Civil Rights Movement of the late 60's, early 70's (including the Troubles)

Share the culture of Newark with youth from Northern Ireland with a focus on the Newark Rebellion and the American Civil Rights Movement.

Compare and contrast the experiences of youth in Belfast, NI and youth in Newark, NJ.
PEER MENTORING
All participating students will also receive training in peer mentoring from Queens University in Belfast, Northern Ireland. They will have the opportunity to earn a certification in Peer Mentoring (Level 1). All participating scholars will be required to, upon their return to Newark, launch a micro peer mentoring program. With assistance from a designated school employee, and MENTOR Newark, these students will mentor 10 - 12 middle school students from a feeder school.
Mentoring programs will include leadership development, critical thinking and preparation for global travel. The goal of this Peer Mentoring component of the initiative is to launch a minimum of 5 micro Peer Mentoring initiatives in the city of Newark by June 2020.
